What is babi yar?

Babi Yar is a ravine in Kyiv, Ukraine. The name Babi Yar translates to "Grandma's Ravine" in Ukrainian. During World War II, in September 1941, Nazi forces killed more than 33,000 Jewish residents of Kyiv in Babi Yar over a two-day period. The killings continued for months, with Roma, disabled people, and Soviet prisoners of war also targeted. Overall estimates put the number of those killed between 100,000 to 150,000 people. The site has become a symbol of the Holocaust in Ukraine and is recognized as one of the most significant sites of Jewish tragedy during World War II. Today, the site is memorialized by a large park and a monument.
